In alignment with our NAMI StigmaFree Workplace strategies, NAMI surveyed American employees to better understand the current state of mental health awareness and education, company culture, and access to mental health care and resources. Below are highlights from our workplace mental health data.
Acceptance for Colleagues, Stigma for Self
77%
of respondents would feel comfortable if their coworkers talked to them about mental health.
But 42% report worrying their career would be negatively impacted if they personally talked about mental health at work.
Employee Mental Health Awareness and Education
75%
think it’s okay to talk about mental health at work.
Top 5 reasons workers don’t feel comfortable talking about mental health at work:
- Stigma or judgment around mental health
- Lack of discussion from colleagues
- Fear of appearing weak
- Fear of losing opportunities or facing retaliation
- Their job is affecting their mental health
Culture of Caring in American Workplaces
1 in 5
are unsatisfied with the culture at their workplace.
More than half of workers report they’re comfortable talking about mental health with their manager or their teammates. But only 2 in 5 feel comfortable sharing with HR, and only 3 in 10 would share with senior leadership.
Access to Services and Support
9 in 10
say mental health care benefits are important to building a positive workplace culture.
But only half the workforce reports knowing how to access their mental health care coverage. Training would help, with over half the respondents who receive training about using their coverage saying it helped them.
